Today I begin what I think will be a series of short poems inspired by lines or phrases that catch my attention as I read James Joyce's Ulysses for the first time.
Can it be? Were you
There all the time without you?
And are you? Am I?

Michael, I'm just now getting around to reading the email robin for Dec. 19/20...
The line from James Joyce's Ulysses is still a riddle to me, because I have yet to sit down with Ulysses... Your haiku, alas, may only be intelligible to those who have taught or sought JJ's classic.
(Hope your Christmas dinner exceeded all your expectations!)

My Haiku is not a commentary on the line I quoted and makes no reference at all to Ulysses. It takes the meaning I inferred from the line onto a different plane, albeit a puzzling one.
Michael, I always enjoy your writing ... Your haiku doesn't quite elude me, though I have not as yet boarded the plane ...
As for the Chicken Marbella, I shall request two helpings of this favorite dish of mine.
Blessings of the season!
